Rare earth compounds and their material applications

Except for a few rare earth materialsthat directly use rare earth metals, most of them are compounds that use rare earth elements. With the rapid development of high-tech such as computers, fiber optic communication, superconductivity, aerospace, and atomic energy, the role of rare earth elements and their compounds in these fields is becoming increasingly important. There are various types of rare earth element compounds, and they are constantly increasing. Among the existing 26000 types of rare earth compounds, there are nearly 4000 rare earth inorganic compounds with confirmed structures.

The synthesis and application of oxides and composite oxides are the most common among rare earth compounds, as they have a strong affinity for oxygen and are easy to synthesize in the air. Among rare earth compounds without oxygen, halides and composite halides are the most commonly synthesized and studied, as they are the raw materials for preparing other rare earth compounds and rare earth metals. In recent years, due to the development of high-tech new materials, extensive research has been conducted on the synthesis and application of oxygen free rare earth compounds such as rare earth sulfides, nitrides, borides, and rare earth complexes, with an increasing scope.
