Zirconium and Hafnium – Two Brothers Forced to Separate

Zirconium (Zr) and hafnium (Hf) are two important rare metals. In nature, zirconium mainly exists in zircon (ZrO2) and zircon (ZrSiO4). There is no separate mineral of hafnium in nature, and hafnium often coexists with zirconium and exists in zirconium ores. Hafnium and zirconium are located in the fourth subgroup of the periodic table of elements, with similar properties. Due to the similar atomic radii, chemical separation is very difficult. As the saying goes, ‘If there is zirconium, there is hafnium, and if there is hafnium, there is zirconium’, reflecting the ‘mutual pity’ of the two ‘brothers’ of zirconium and hafnium.

The separation technology of zirconium and hafnium is also constantly developing. From boiling chlorination process, fire separation, extraction separation of zirconium and hafnium to current wet and fire separation, the separation effect of zirconium and hafnium has been improved, resulting in a continuous increase in the purity of downstream products.

Precursors containing zirconium and hafnium are often used in the field of materials or as catalysts in the petrochemical industry. Zirconium chloride (ZrCl4, also known as zirconium tetrachloride) can be produced by smelting zircon with carbon reduction and chlorination. Hafnium chloride (HfCl4, also known as hafnium tetrachloride) is usually produced by oxidizing hafnium, carbon, and then chlorinating. Zirconium chloride and hafnium chloride are important raw materials for synthesizing precursors containing zirconium and hafnium, which are widely used in aerospace, petrochemical, nuclear and other fields.

Using high-purity zirconium tetrachloride and hafnium tetrachloride as raw materials, products such as n-propanol zirconium/hafnium, n-butanol zirconium/hafnium, tert butanol zirconium/hafnium, ethanol zirconium/hafnium, dichlorodicenyl zirconium/hafnium, and bis (n-butylcyclopentadiene) hafnium dichloride can also be synthesized. These products can also serve as hafnium and zirconium sources for vapor deposition and ceramic precursors, as well as organic synthesis catalysts.
