Yttrium Oxide, also called Yttria, high purity Yttrium Oxides are the most important materials for tri-bands Rare Earth phosphors which give the red colour in colour television & computer tubes. In optical industry, the Yttrium Oxide is used to produce Yttrium-Iron-Garnets, which are very effective microwave filters. Low purity of Yttrium Oxide are widely applied in electronic ceramics. It is widely used to make Eu:YVO4 and Eu:Y2O3 phosphors that give the red color in color TV picture tubes.

Application

Yttrium oxide (Y2O3), also known as yttria, has several applications, but its main and most significant application is in the field of ceramics and as a phosphor in various display technologies:
1.Ceramics:Yttrium oxide is a key component in the production of advanced ceramics and ceramic materials. It is used as a stabilizer to improve the properties of ceramics, particularly zirconia (zirconium dioxide). Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is widely used in various high-temperature and wear-resistant applications, including:Thermal barrier coatings for gas turbine engine components.
Dental prosthetics and implants.
Cutting tools and abrasives.
Oxygen sensors.
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) for clean energy generation.
2.Phosphors:Yttrium oxide is used as a phosphor in cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays, fluorescent lamps, and other lighting technologies. When doped with different rare earth elements (such as europium, terbium, or cerium), yttria phosphors can emit various colors of light, making them essential for producing colored displays and efficient lighting.
3.Optics and Lasers:Yttrium oxide is used as a host material for doping with rare earth ions to create solid-state laser materials. For example, yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystals doped with neodymium (Nd:YAG) are used in solid-state lasers for various applications, including laser cutting, welding, and medical procedures.
4.Coatings:Yttrium oxide coatings are applied to certain surfaces, such as those used in spacecraft, to provide thermal protection and resistance to high temperatures.
5.Catalysts:Yttrium oxide nanoparticles have been studied as catalysts in various chemical reactions, including the production of biofuels and chemicals.
6.Fuel Cells:Yttrium oxide can be used as an electrolyte material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which are a promising technology for efficient and clean energy conversion.
7.Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG):Yttrium oxide is a component of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) crystals, which have unique magnetic properties. YIG crystals are used

8.Electronics: Yttrium oxide films are used in microelectronics and semiconductor industries for various purposes, including as gate dielectric materials in field-effect transistors (FETs) and as insulating layers.

Yttrium oxide also used for the production of fluorescent materials, ferrite, single crystal materials, optical glass, artificial gemstones, ceramics,  yttrium metal, glass and ceramics and magnetic materials.
